Have a strategy to deal with the unexpected

This past year my business was shaping-up to be one of the best ever; but then then everything went south.

Deal after deal after deal fell apart. The financial and reputational cost to me was significant. My stress level skyrocketed.

But that’s the way business goes. The unexpected happens. You can’t control your clients. You can’t control the market. You can’t control the competition. Sometimes sxxt happens.

So what keeps me from withering like a daisy and throwing in the towel?

Our STRATEGY

Our company has a strategy. We plan for the unexpected. We know what we’re doing and why. If we need to course correct, we know how.

So why should this matter to you?

You need a personal life strategy

The etymology of the word strategy is the ancient Greek word “strategos”, which means a military leader. As we know, the purpose of a military leader is to engage and beat the enemy.

Businesses large and small have a strategy to win on the battlefield of commerce. They arm their employees to take home the spoils of market share and profit.

Businesses believe that the role of strategy is so important that they hire Chief Strategy Officers (“CSOs”). CSOs are paid big money to develop and oversee the company’s strategic plan. (For more on CSOs, read this article by the world class consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group).

A company builds its strategy through self-awareness. An awareness of what it wants to accomplish. An awareness of potential risks and opportunities. An awareness of what it’s good at and how it needs to improve.

So what can we learn from this?

If businesses have strategies to ensure their success, then you should have a strategy to ensure your personal success. You need to become your own Chief Strategy Officer. Be your own CSO and plan for a healthier, happier and more successful life!

Invest in yourself: take a personal strategic retreat

Wouldn’t you agree that you need a strategy for your life? A strategy for reacting to the unexpected and for getting what you want?!

Don’t miss this point: If you want to live a healthier, happier and more successful life, you need to think strategically about your life.

So what is a strategy?

A strategy is a plan for achieving your goals.

“Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.” Prov 21:5-6 NLTse

Developing YOUR strategy requires some serious thought. But when you execute the plan and work it hard, the payoff is HUGE.

One tool businesses use to develop a strategy is a “strategic retreat”. This is when business leaders retreat from their everyday distractions and strategically plan for the future.

I believe so much in the value of a strategic retreat, that I’ve used it to plan my own life. I call this process a “personal strategic retreat”. (Click here to receive my free ebook on how to take a personal strategic retreat).

So what’s a personal strategic retreat?

⁃ A personal strategic retreat is about YOU.

⁃ It’s about understanding why you are where you are. It’s about understanding and defining your dreams and how to get there.

⁃ It’s about establishing objectives. It’s about making decisions. It’s about prioritizing your life.

I encourage you to invest in yourself, and take a personal strategic retreat. Invest the time and reap the benefits for a lifetime. There’s nothing more important to your future than investing in your future.

Be Wise and Successful…

1. Read my free ebook: RETREAT: How A Personal Strategic Retreat Can Change Your Life. This free guide will walk you through the process and steps for taking your own successful personal strategic retreat.

2. Take 20 minutes and ask yourself these four questions. Journal your responses and use them during your personal strategic retreat process.

⁃ What do you want out of your future?

⁃ What are you good at that will help you get “there”?

⁃ What challenges will you face in getting “there”?

⁃ What specific action steps are required to get from “Here” to “There”?

3. Envision what your life will be like when you achieve your dreams. Journal how you want your life to be different. Dream a little about the goals you want to achieve, and how your life can be more fulfilled. Motivate yourself to see the benefits of a personal strategic retreat.

4. Make a decision to be proactive about your life. I’m amazed at how many people go through life without direction, without a strategy. Don’t be one of those people that lets life happen to them. Be proactive with your life and take control of your future.

You weren’t put on this earth to stumble through life. You have something great to offer the world. Develop a strategy for your life and you will be a happier, healthier and more successful person.
